About American Legion Post 554

American Legion Post 554 in Fort Plain, New York is dedicated to supporting veterans, strengthening our community, and preserving the values of service, patriotism, and American freedom.Our members include veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces who continue their service by helping fellow veterans, supporting youth programs, and hosting community events throughout the year.We welcome veterans, families, and community members to visit the post and participate in our activities.

MEMBERSHIP

American Legion Post 554
Welcomes new members who wish to serve veterans, support our community, and carry forward the ideals of patriotism and service. Eligibility for membership in The American Legion is open to men and women who have served honorably in the United States Armed Forces during designated periods of wartime or national conflict as defined by the American Legion.
Family members also have the opportunity to participate through our active American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion Squadron. The Auxiliary is open to spouses, mothers, daughters, granddaughters, and other female relatives of eligible veterans who served our nation honorably. The Sons of The American Legion (SAL) welcomes male descendants, grandsons, and adopted sons of Legionnaires or eligible veterans who share in the mission of honoring service and supporting veterans programs.Together these organizations strengthen the work of the post through community service, patriotic events, youth programs, and support for veterans and their families. Chaplain Services
Our Post Commander, Rev. James Peck, also serves as Chaplain for American Legion Post 554. He is an ordained Minister of the Gospel with the Alliance of Reformed Churches and is available to provide pastoral care and spiritual support to our members and their families.
Upon request, Rev. Peck is available to officiate funeral services for members of the post and for veterans within the surrounding community, honoring their service and offering comfort to their loved ones.If you or a loved one need assistance, please contact the post and we will connect you with the appropriate resources.

Request Your DD-214 or Military Service Records

Veterans and their next of kin can request a copy of their DD-214 or other military service records directly from the U.S. National Archives. The online eVetRecs system allows you to securely submit a request for your official military personnel file. These records are often required for VA benefits, employment verification, burial benefits, and membership in veterans organizations.Never pay a third-party website for a DD-214. The National Archives provides copies free of charge to veterans and their families.

The Energy Affordability Program (EAP) provides a monthly credit on your National Grid electric and gas bills if you receive VA Disability or Survivors Pension benefits. You do not need to be enrolled in HEAP to qualify through your VA benefits. Simply apply with your VA award letter and National Grid does the rest.

Important Note on Disability Rating

Your VA disability percentage (10%, 50%, 90%, etc.) does NOT affect your eligibility or discount amount. What matters is that you receive VA Disability or Survivors Pension benefits and your household income level. As a permanently disabled veteran, you may qualify for an add-on benefit on top of the standard monthly credit.

Enhanced EAP New Program

As of January 13, 2026, a new Enhanced Energy Affordability Program (EEAP) is available for veterans who may not qualify for traditional EAP but have household income below the State Median Income. You can only be enrolled in one program at a time. Apply at nyeeap.com or call 877-400-2501.

Neighborhood Heating Fund

National Grid and HeartShare Human Services of NY offer a $200 one-time grant to National Grid customers eligible for HEAP benefits. Customers may apply once per year after exhausting HEAP assistance. Available to Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island residents in 1-2 family homes or apartments where tenant pays heat.
